Why ya gotta be a jerk, Steam?

Why ya gotta be a jerk like this, Steam? All I want is to start pre-loading Borderlands and you gotta go and do a thing like this. I thought we were cool. Didn't I always start you before playing TF2? Didn't I add my game shortcuts to your in-game browser? Why the hate? I got a ridiculously fast internet connection so I won't even be long to download this. Was teaming up with four others to buy this not good enough for you?

Oh sure I have in the past said bad things about Steam but I've seen the error of my ways.

The best tricks are the old tricks

So my computer is starting to push the 2.5 year mark now which means at this point about the only thing to do to keep it a viable gaming rig for another 18 months or so is to put band-aids on it via patches, maybe a new vid card, and other tricks.

Fortunately, one of the oldest Windows tricks is still the best, even under Vista. The trick? Slap in another hard drive, format it, and move your pagefile there and then make the pagefile have a static size to where it does not expand and shrink like Windows often makes it do. While I know the hard and fast rule is a page file 1.5 times the size of your RAM, I went ahead and made it six gigs for 2 gigs of RAM.

So I had an older IDE drive (PATA) rated at 7200RPM in my closet that had old data on it so after a quick format, configuration, and reboot it's in business and looking good.

Plus I also ripped out the floppy drive on the machine to get rid of that messy FDD cable and hopefully help the airflow a little bit.

And that's it for Tweaking for dummies.

What's that? More Serious Sam? Well sure!

It's safe to say that if you ask anyone who knows me and those who may only know me from the dying last gasp of their friends after I pummel them, that this clip for Serious Sam is pretty much my own autobiography.
