Straight Jacket Type Fun
Quakecon 2003, Friday 8/15/2003
ARGH!!!
Normally, you don't expect to hear that about Quakecon but that's been my reaction so far after leaving the first day's events. There's been two things that have hacked me off so far and I'll be quick about it since you probably don't care about hearing the ramblings of just one man.
First, if you're looking for another insight into how Doom3 played in multiplayer, perhaps it's best if you move along. The reason for this is that apparently, much to my chagrin, they apparently gave out passes to play the demo at certain allotted times. Not knowing this, and seeing the line at the booths, I realized my chance to see the game and play it is slim to none. But I ask you: Would the ramblings of one web writer really stop someone or encourage a person further to play and purchase Doom3? I'm thinking no so in the end it should be okay.
I can tell you this though: There was some scenes from the game going on some screens outside the booth and there was new footage not seen in the footage at last year's Quakecon. From what I saw there were imps, spiders, zombies, and plenty of other things that will readily be crushed by your shooting skills. Including, and I wish I could make this up, but it looked like there were fat pudgy baby-faced zombies that had the bodies of mosquitos. Yeah, I know. This game's gonna kick ass.
Secondly, while the event appears to be going well, someone needs to SHOOT, REPEATEDLY AND OFTEN, the person responsible for the Quakecon online schedule:
13:00 - 14:30 id Software Key Note Event - featuring Todd Hollenshead, Tim Willits, Robert Duffy, and Fred Nilsson Dallas Ballroom
This oh so minor point wasn't posted on the Quakecon site until AFTER the event had started. So, I basically stumbled across this event by chance and caught the last hour or so.
Ok, rant off. Let's get to the good stuff.
id Software Key Note Event
I entered right when the Q&A session was starting and it was a round table format. They fielded questions or pre-written questions were asked. Let's get to Doom3 information. In fact, I know your time is precious, so let's just bullet point it all

And that was the keynote address. The second part I looked at today was the kiosk hosting Call of Duty.
Ok, let me ask you this, dear reader. If you bring a demo to Quakecon, the biggest LAN party event of the year, wouldn't you, if you were a developer, bring a demo of your game with some multiplayer in it?! Well, the people who are developing Call of Duty didn't think so. Maybe it's just me, but that doesn't seem right. Dare I say it's atrocious! Yes, I dare.
Regardless, Call of Duty's single player is based on the Quake3/Wolfenstein engine. When you take those two what do you get? Medal of Honor version 2.0. The difference? A different HUD I guess.
However, that's not necessarily a bad thing. The sounds are sharp, the weapons effects and environment are staggering and your squadmates are USEFUL! You can't directly command them but they actually kill stuff it seems. Also, on the graphics. I could even see the woodgrain on the gun you carried and look straight down the sights of the guns. I'm assuming this has been done before but it's the first time I've seen it in a game and found it fun to try, especially for sniping at enemies.
